this release, in the file BOG.WRI. It is in Windows Write format.

Acknowledgements: this version of Bind was written in large part
by Paul Vixie, ported to NT by Greg Schueman, Larry Kahn, and Viraj
Bais. Continuing maintenance of the NT port by Larry Kahn. This
install, and control panel applet by Software.com.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to BIND 4.9.3. This release is packaged and provided in
executable format for the Intel and MIPS architectures under NT by
Software.com, Inc, and includes the following added features over the
	public-domain version:

	a. A GUI installation program written using the InstallShield
	    product from Stirling Software.

	b. The BIND service logs in under a given user name, having only
"Login as a service" privilege. This avoids any security problems
which could arise from the service running as an administrator.

	c. The installation script will create common configurations
for primary, secondary, and caching-only servers. You will
need to know the machine name and IP address data for your zone,
to "flesh out" these data files.

	d. The installation will create a control-panel applet, written by
Software.com, which is a GUI face on the code from the NDC.EXE
command line utility written by Larry Kahn. This applet allows you
to start and stop the service, get the status, turn on and off debug
trace, dump the database, force a reload of the database, etcetera.

	e. The installed directory is stored in the NT registry, rather than
in the NAMED.BOOT file. This means that all the setup files reside
in the named directory, and are not searched for on the path. The
command-line utilities, and the control-panel applet, will be installed
	    in the system directory, however.

	f. A port to the MIPS-NT architecture is available upon request, and is
used internally by Software.com. Again, this is a beta product.

Brief Installation Instructions

1. If you currently have BIND on this machine (any older version that was NOT
installed using this GUI) you must STOP NOW, and REMOVE IT from your system
before running this install program. There is no way for us to figure out
what every other version of BIND might do when it installs itself.

2. You will need to have created a user in NT for BIND (default is 'domain.service')
and given that user rights to 'Login as a service'. This user does not need any
other privileges, and for security, should NOT HAVE any other privileges.

3. This installation program will create what it thinks are sensible defaults for
the configuration files for BIND. If you have a tricky setup, let it finish,
then go back and stop the service (try the control panel applet) and edit the
configuration files. The files will all be in the directory you install
(default is c:\win32app\bind) and will be named as follows:

NAMED.BOOT - the boot configuration file.
NAMED.127.0.0 - the loopback identity file.
NAMED.CACHE - the root server hint file, from InterNIC.
NAMED.ZONEINFO -	the data file containing the zone RRs (for primaries).
NAMED.INADDR - the data file containing the PTR address definitions (ditto).

4. Note: the "directory" command in the NAMED.BOOT file (from other versions of BIND)
will be ignored. This setup puts the directory name in the NT registry, and uses
that to locate all its files.

Good luck, and let us know how it works! Email to dns@software.com, and see our site
